Cambridge Evening News and Charity Cheque

On Tuesday 12th November Past Lady Captain 2018 of March Golf Club in 2018, Lydia Molyneux, met with Tammy Swiderski from the East Anglian Air Ambulance.  Lydia wanted to present a cheque for £1,353.75 which was raised during her captaincy year for this important local charity.

Lydia  “I chose to support East Anglian Air Ambulance because I felt that it was a service that any one of us could need at any time, not just for those suffering from ill health. Having lost a close friend in tragic circumstances in 2017, it made me realise how important services like this are to our community. Although the EAAA receives some Government funding, they rely predominantly on the goodwill of the community. If all of us gave £3 per year they would be able to fund their basic needs. Tammy told me that just one helmet costs £2,000, so my donation, will go some way to providing one of those but it is only a small gesture when you consider the demands made upon the service.”

Cambridge Evening News Winter Foursomes

On Tuesday 12th November 2019 Derek Wisbey and Danny Daniel played Peter Mansfield and Micheal Drakakis from Newmarket GC in the first round of the Cambridge Evening News Winter Foursomes competition at Ely GC. The weather was atrocious but the company was really good and the match was played in good spirit.  It was a very close match and a shame somebody had to win but March Golf Club came through to win on the final hole.  The second round will be drawn sometime in December.

Not only did Carolyn win these two prizes she also won overall in the individual stableford with 30 points beating Emma Norman into 2nd place with 28 points and Margaret Butt in third place with 26 points and was part of the Canada Cup Team (Carolyn Morton, Lady Captain Sandra Russell and Carole Wood).

Captains Eclectic Challenge

As part of his fund-raising activities for the year, March Golf Club Captain, Alan Jones, took part in a 3-round Eclectic Challenge. All three rounds of golf were completed on the same day, Thursday 17th October, with an early start at 7.12am. The three rounds were completed at 14.22pm making a total of 7 hours 10 minutes for the 54 holes.

The aim of an eclectic challenge was to complete each hole in the lowest possible score with only the best score counting to the final total. Alan completed the challenge with a final gross score of 76 (against a par of 70) which was a decent effort for a 12-handicap golfer.

Club members were given the opportunity to guess the final score and four members (Graham Twist, Baz Smith, Simon Moore and Danny Daniel) correctly picked the final total.

Prizes were on offer to those members who got the correct final total and, in the draw carried out straight afterwards, Graham was the lucky winner of a free 4-ball voucher for Stoke Rochford Golf Club. It is a fine course to visit and Graham and three other members will have a great day out. The runners-up, Simon, Danny and Baz won a £10 credit voucher to spend in the professional’s shop at March Golf Club run by our resident PGA professional, Alex Oldham.

Alan would like to express his thanks to all the members who paid to sponsor him for his Captain’s Challenge with a good sum of money raised for his Captain’s project for the year.

Alan would also like to thank those members who supported him on the day. Without the help and support of Mick Russell, Gary Brinn and Ray Pescud, the challenge could not have been completed.
